Obituary for Don F. Ashby

Lubec - Don F. Ashby, 91, passed away on February 16th at Jonesport. He was born on September 9th, 1923, the son of Earle and Jennie (Denbow) Ashby.

Don joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942, just out of Lubec High School and went on to have a career spanning 24 years. A veteran of World War II, he served with both Navy and Coast Guard crews and helped to take various islands such as Sasevo and Guam. After mine sweeping duty in Saipan he was sent back to Pearl Harbor to be sent home.

Don tried a semester at the University of Maine but decided that wasn't for him and reenlisted in the Coast Guard in 1948. His career included light keeper, weather patrol (off Newfoundland), duty at Petit Manan Lighthouse, Moose Peak, Cross Island Life Boat station and West Quoddy Head as officer in charge, BMCM (E-9).

Retiring in February, 1968, he went on to work for General Service Administration in Calais, followed by construction work from carpentry to bridge work. Don was a light house keeper of many talents. He was a true "Down Easter" - always ready to lend a helping hand and was a friend to all. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing (especially ice fishing) and the companionship of his numerous cats and dogs. Don also enjoyed living by the sea. Don was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer association; member of Washington Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 37 of Lubec and a life member of Parkson - Vose VFW Post No. 3315 of Lubec. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he will be sorely missed.

Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, Trudy (Grant) Ashby, formerly of Cherryfield; son Craig Ashby of Lubec; daughter Carole and son-in-law Wayne Newman of Brewer; granddaughter Lorri Newman and great grandson Wyatt Newell of Hampden; two nieces and four nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, William and Bertrand Ashby.

The family would like to thank the staff at the former Ocean View Nursing home and Sunrise Care Facility for their care and compassion.

Love you, old pal.

A spring memorial service will be announced at a later date.
