Clyde Terry Bernhardt, 78, died Nov. 26, 2015 at his home in Machias. He was born in Lebanon, PA on Dec. 30, 1936 , the son of the late Joseph and Nellie (Nagle ) Bernhardt .
He graduated from Cornwall High School, Cornwall PA in 1955 . He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May of 1955 and was honorably discharged March of 1965. He was employed by the U.S. Civil Service as a Power Plant Electrician in June of 1965 and retired as a Power Plant Control man in December 1991. He married Marcia Mason on April 20, 1968 . Clyde joined the Machias Fire Department in April, 1966 and was active until 2015. He served as Fire Chief for the town of Machias for several years . He was appointed as an Honorary Assistant Chief for Life in 1998 . He was a member of the Maine State Federation of Firefighters since 1966 and became Vice President for Washington County in September of 2006 .
He was a bus driver for the Machias school department from 1972 to 2009. He was a registered Girl Scout Leader for 27 years, serving as local area Girl Scout Cookie Manager , adult leader trainer , and Girl Scout Day Camp Manager . He was a member of the Machias Valley Baptist Church . In 1989 he became active in the American Red Cross as a First Aid and CPR instructor , and in 1991 as a disaster volunteer. He has reported to numerous disasters in Maine as well as throughout the U.S. He was a member of Ephraim Johnson American Legion in Machias .
He is survived by his wife of forty seven years Marcia ; two daughters Heidi Long and husband Randy of Hubbardston , MA (currently working in India) and Jodi Parsons and husband Timothy and their children Emma Nicole and Jacob Timothy all of Pembroke , NH ; a brother Ronald of Cornwall , PA ; three nieces , and two nephews.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother Joseph .
Funeral services will be held 1pm Wed. Dec. 9, 2015 at the Machias Valley Baptist Church with Pastor John Sprague officiating. Burial will follow in the Longfellow Cemetery, Machias .Condolences and memories may be shared at www.mcclurefamilyfuneral.com
