Obituary for Donald H Johnson

Donald H Johnson
September 5 th , 1936 – October 5 th , 2022
East Machias, Maine and Avon Park, Florida
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, and friend. Donald
“Don” Johnson who passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of October 5 th , 2022.
He was born September 5 th , 1936 in Machias, only child of the late Frederick and Esther
(Armstrong) Johnson. Don joined the air force directly out of high school in 1954 and spent his
time stationed in Chaumont, France. He returned home in 1958 to marry the Love of his Life
Barbara who he corresponded with by letters for 3 years.
Don Leaves behind 2 daughters Tammy (Johnson) Armstrong of Machias and Terry (Johnson)
Sousa and husband William of Gorham; and three granddaughters to whom he was lovingly
known as Bampie, Kayla and fiancé Nick Ferrante, Olivia and husband Brian Lipe and Kristi and
husband Nick Arsenault. He also leaves behind a very special companion, Thelma Mullen, they
found each other later in life after the loss of their spouses and got to share wintering in Florida
and summers visiting Eastport sitting on the pier enjoying a Rosie’s Hotdog.
Don worked for many years for Charlie Berry at Berry’s Exxon, to later buy the station and
rename it Don’s Exxon. Don was known for his warm smile and a kind heart. If the true measure
of a man’s life is the impact, he had on those around him then Don’s legacy will stand tall and
strong in Machias and the surrounding area as he was truly a man who was “bigger than life.”
He spent many years with Anah Shriners and Started Anah campers. In Lieu of flowers the
family requests donations to Anah Shriners.
