Obituary for Verna May Dennison (Look)

CUTLER – VERNA MAY (LOOK) DENNISON completed her earthly journey, Wednesday, June 22, 2022, with her family holding her hands as she went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born in Whiting, Maine, June 2, 1927, the 9th child of Ralph M. Look and Lula (Huntley) Look. In 1949, Verna married the love of her life, Raymond Dennison, and moved to Cutler where they raised their two children, Rhoda and Randy.

Verna began her working career at a canning factory in her home town. Verna did not graduate high school in the traditional fashion, but in her mid-late 50’s, she decided to rectify that – she went back to school and earned her GED! A very proud moment for her and her family; proving it is never too late to set and achieve your goals. She then went to work at an assisted living center earning many accolades and her CNA certificate. At age 70, she decided it was time to retire; only to discover that retirement was not for her. She was given the opportunity to become a Foster Grandparent at Bay Ridge Elementary School in Cutler only a short drive from home; where she doted on “her” kids for 12 years. Her compassion served her well as she worked as a foster grandparent. She was a “real grandmother” to many of the students and sometimes was the ear or shoulder that that “little” person needed that no one else could provide. That was true for all of the grades, she was always pleased beyond measure to tell the story that “even those great big eighth grade boys gave me a hug.” Verna knew that you reap what you sow. Verna and her sisters cared for their parents at home for more than 12 years. With limited formal medical training (one sister was an RN), these sisters cared for their parents with loyalty, diligence and compassion; qualities Verna shared daily. If someone needed a hand, Verna was the hand ready to help.

Verna is survived by her sister, Jean Wood; daughter, Rhoda Hodgdon and husband Edward; son Randy Dennison and wife Dianne; four grandchildren Joshua Bragg and wife Shelley; Judd Bragg and wife Kathleen; Keith Dennison and wife Paula; Erica Redman and husband Daniel; 10 great-grandchildren: Danielle Bragg, Joseph Bragg, Jonathan Bragg, Sophie Bragg, Sydney Anderson, Elizabeth Redman, Brinleigh Redman, Charlotte Bragg, Aerin Bragg and Zoey Dennison as well as bonus step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Verna was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Raymond; siblings, Faith Huckins; Neil Look; Maxwell Look; June Davis; Vincent Look; Inez Ackley; Mildred Bertwell; Virginia Reynolds; Thelma Cates; and Betty Burns.

A celebration of Verna’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday July 30th, 2022 at the Head of the River Baptist Church in Cutler.
