Obituary for Kenneth Gatcomb

East Machias- Kenneth E. Gatcomb

Kenneth (Tim) Gatcomb, 86, went home to be with the Lord on March 31, 2021 with all of his family by his side.

Tim was born on November 15, 1934 in East Machias to Warren H. Gatcomb and Hazel A. Elder Gatcomb. Living his whole life in East Machias, he loved hunting, fishing, and trapping with both his sons and grandsons as well as with many friends.

At the age of 17, Tim was called into the woods to work alongside his father for more than 10 years gaining the hard work ethic that he is still known for to this day. After his father’s passing, Tim continued his logging career with companies including Graham Brothers, St. Regis, and Brown Brothers.

Tim had a passion for being in the woods and remained in the woods working for many years. In 1952, there was no such thing as a chainsaw or machinery. He had begun logging with draft horses, cross-cut saws, and an axe. As Tim would say himself, it separated the boys from the men. After more than 30 years in the woods and with the use of machinery increasing, Tim decided it was time to move on. He became Head of Maintenance at Washington Academy, spending more than 15 years at WA before retiring to be a full-time grandfather (Papa Tim) to his 6 grandchildren.

In his retirement, Tim spent every chance that he could in the woods chasing deer, wetting a line, or following his grandchildren on many adventures. In 33 years, Tim had only missed one day of deer season. He was known for his love of the outdoors and his passion was passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Tim will be dearly missed by all who knew him, he greatly impacted many lives. His stories were one of a kind, a smile you will never forget, and those gentle calloused hands of a hard-working man.

Tim is survived by the love of his life, Nellie Wood Gatcomb and their four children. Daughter, Susanne Griffin and husband Greg; Son, Wayne Gatcomb and wife Carlene; Son, Kenneth (Timmy) Gatcomb II and wife Juli; Daughter, Kandee Ramsdell and husband Danny. Six grandchildren, Grandson, Gregory Griffin and wife Mandy; Grandson, Corey Griffin; Grandson, Stephen Gatcomb and wife Brittany; Granddaughter, Jessica Mitchell and husband Reggie; Grandson, Jason Ramsdell; Grandson, Seth Gatcomb and partner Hannah. Along with 14 great grandchildren, Emma, Ben, Trey, Connor, Owen, Bryce, Adelyn, Shelby, Aubrey, Zeb, Mei Mei, Kenneth, Aria, and Hazel.

Tim is also survived by his 3 sisters, Marlene Gatcomb Wood and husband Carlton; Carlene Gatcomb Look and husband Brian; Joyce Gatcomb Merrick.

A special thank you to Papa Tim’s dear friend, Paul Cox, for sharing your turnip patch and many years of friendship.

Tim was predeceased by his mother and father; brothers, John and Erwin and sister, Ellen Richardson.

There will be a memorial service held at the home of Nellie and Tim on April 10th from 1-3 pm. Masks and social distancing will be required.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Larabee Baptist Church or Holmes Bay Baptist Church.
