Frank B. Gay, 90, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2020 with his daughters by his side. He was born in Milbridge, February 4, 1930, the youngest child of Orrin and Geraldine (Strout) Gay. He lived his entire childhood in Milbridge and graduated from Milbridge High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952, in the Korean War, aboard the Destroyer Forrest Royal DD872. Upon returning home, he worked in the family grocery business with his brothers, the O. P. Gay Store started by his father.
In 1953, he married Barbara Hayward and in 1958 they moved to Machias where he continued working in the family grocery business, Gay’s Red & White, then Gay’s Shop & Save and then Hannaford before retiring in 1991 after 39 years of service.
Throughout his life, Frank enjoyed fishing, hunting, canoeing on the West Branch of the Machias River, playing cribbage, dancing, time at camp on Fulton Lake and most of all, his family.
Surviving are his three daughters, Janet Lea Dowling and husband Gary of East Machias; Rebecca Brewer and companion, Brian Seltzer of Gales Ferry, CT.; Lois Stenger and husband, Rob of Enfield, NH. 5 special grandchildren, Nicole & Corin Dowling, Jordan Brewer and fiancé, Justin Caras, Wesley and Tucker Stenger and 1 great granddaughter, Cora, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Gay, in October 2019, his son, Robert “Bobby” Gay in 1980. Sister, Virginia Grant; Brothers, Carroll and Lawrence Gay.
Services will be held 1 pm Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Lee Pellon Center in Machias. Burial will be at a later date, in the Jacksonville Cemetery, alongside his wife and son.
