Margaret “Peggy” Lillian (Wagner) Fernald passed away January 16, 2020 surrounded by her children.She fought a long and courageous battle and is now at peace.
Peggy was born on March 27, 1940 in Albany, New York to Margaret and Frederick Wagner. She was a graduate of St. Johns Academy Class of 1957. She married her husband Keith Fernald on December 22, 1958 and they shared 37 years of marriage.
Peggy worked with her husband in Radio Broadcasting in Washington D.C and San Francisco, CA. In 1969, they relocated to Maine and Cherryfield became her home. Peggy quickly became an active member of the Cherryfield Community. She helped found the Cherryfield Ambulance Service and the Narraguagus Nursery School. She worked on the 4th of July Committee for many years, counted ballots during election years, and was a proud member of the Firecracker Ladies.
Peggy worked many jobs over the years including becoming a CNA at Narraguagus Bay Nursing Home, a clerk at the Cherryfield Town Office, a Library Assistant and a long time valued employee of C.H. Mathews Store. The job she was most proud of and passionate for years was her work at Cherryfield Elementary School. She was a beloved educator for 24 years. She impacted the lives of many students and formed lasting bonds with her coworkers. She enjoyed her many hours involved planning school plays, graduations, coaching cheering and many other special events during the school year.
She especially enjoyed watching the Red Sox and was known to be Serena Williams #1 fan! She looked forward to her semi-annual gatherings with her “Girls” … Sharon, Clarice, Sally and Jennifer.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, a dearly loved grandmother Margaret, her favorite Uncle Frank, her brother Frederick, her sweet granddaughter Meagan Faith, and step children Mary Ann, John, Sharon & Peter. Peggy is lovingly survived by her children Stephen Fernald and his wife Jennifer of Ellsworth, Susan Ryan and her husband Gordon of Albany, NY, Wendy Schors and her husband Sam of East Machias. Her grandchildren Nicholas Fernald, Abigail Ryan, Jacob Schors, Hunter Fernald, MacKenzie Schors, Brittany Pendexter, Brandon Randall, and Jordyn Gordon. Her great grandchildren Noah, Rylee and Vera. She is also survived by her sister Debby Gergenti, brother Richard Wagner, Brother in law Joe Fernald and his wife Linda, Stepsons Chris Fernald and Terry Fernald, special cousins Sharon Herbert, Diane Tegethoff and Charlie Herbert as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Peggy’s life was blessed with many special friends who brought her great joy. Special thanks to Della Collins, Gloria Bagley, Cindy Reichert, Phyliss Sproul, Jessie Santerre, Kelly Wescott, Rita Howard and Lori Barbee for your years of support and unending friendship. Peggy also had many special caregivers during her illness that became friends to her especially Janet Farren, Carol Chambers and Susan Huber.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 24th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Cherryfield. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Saturday January 25th at the Congregational Church in Cherryfield. Reception immediately following at the Cherryfield Elementary School. The family looks forward to sharing memories with Peggy’s many friends during this time.
Peggy had a great love for Cherryfield Elementary School. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to the Cherryfield Academy Elevator Fund, 53 Main Street, Cherryfield, ME 04622 or to the Peggy Fernald Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit a Cherryfield Elementary Alumni graduating from Narraguagus High School pursuing a degree in Education.
