Barbara H. Gay
Barbara H. Gay, 87, passed away October 18, 2019 after a period of declining health. She was born in Machias, June 17, 1932, the youngest child of Lowell & Christine Day Hayward. She grew up at the foot of Day Hill in Wesley, ME. Upon graduation from Machias High School in 1949, she was employed with New England Telephone Co. for 4 years before marrying Frank B. Gay in 1953. They lived in Milbridge for 5 years before moving to Machias where they have resided for 61 years. Throughout her life, Barbara enjoyed cooking, playing pinochle, playing cribbage, dancing, time at camp on Fulton Lake, and most of all, her family.
Surviving is her husband of 66 years, Frank B. Gay and their children, Janet Dowling and husband, Gary; Rebecca Brewer and companion, Brian Seltzer; Lois Stenger and husband, Rob. 5 special grandchildren, Nicole and Corin Dowling, Jordan Brewer, Wesley and Tucker Stenger, and 1 great granddaughter, Cora, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Robert “Bobby” Gay; Brothers, Julian Hayward and wife, Anne; Lowell Hayward, Jr. and wife Isabell; Richard Hayward and wife, Timmy. Sisters, Vivian Leighton and husband, Vernell; Angie Cox and husband Guy. Brother and Sister-In-Laws’, Virginia and Gardner Grant; Carroll and Lorna Gay; Lawrence and Betty Gay.
At her request, there will be no visiting hours. Services will be held 1 pm Thursday October 24,2019 at McClure Family Funeral Home 467 Dublin Street (Route 1) Machias with Pastor Betty Duzen officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery, East Machias.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Robert “Bobby” Gay Scholarship Fund c/o Machias Savings Bank, ATTN: Jennifer Tuell, P.O. Box 318, Machias, ME 04654.
