Kathy Wanda Smith , 68, died May 19, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 22, 1951 in Machias the daughter of the late Kenneth and Muriel (Foss) Flaherty.
She was a graduate of Machias Memorial High School, the University of Maine at Machias , and received her Masters Degree at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, New Mexico.
She was married to Gregory Smith for 34 years and the mother of Matthew Smith. She lived in Alaska for 15 years working for the state of Alaska. She then returned to Maine where she worked teaching in the Harrington Elementary School for 21 years, retiring in 2014. she was a member of the Machias Valley Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, her horses, and other pets. Most of all she was proud of her granddaughter Dana, and enjoyed being with her.
She is survived by her son Matthew and his wife Jennifer of Marshfield ; granddaughter Dana ; a brother Michael Flaherty of York, ME ; a special cousin Karen of Marshfield ; Aunt Mary and husband Thatcher Clark of Marshfield; Uncle Earl Flaherty Jr of Whitneyville; Uncle Leeman Foss and wife Linda of Harrison, ME ; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a brother Patrick Flaherty , and an Aunt and Uncle Robert and Norma Flaherty.
Graveside services will be held 1 pm Thursday May 23, 2019 at the Getchell Cemetery, Marshfield with Pastor John Sprague officiating.
