Carroll was a 1939 Graduate of Washington Academy and then attended the NYA School, learning many skills that would help him obtain a position with Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut.
Carroll joined the war effort in 1942 based out of Hunter Field in Savannah, GA. It was there he met Barbara Bazemore, who was employed at the base in the flight control tower. It was love at first sight and they were married on November 30,1943, shortly before he deployed to the Pacific Theater for two years. Utilizing his skills as a P-38 mechanic with the 49th Fighter Group, 7th, 8th and 9th Squadrons, 5th Air Force of the US Army Air Forces, Carroll spent time in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan.
Discharged with the rank of CPL in December of 1945, his honors include the Purple Heart, WWII Victory Medal, American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, and Good Conduct Medal. At the conclusion of WWII, he returned to Georgia with his wife and was employed by Delta Airlines for 7 years as an airline mechanic. Eventually he and his wife Barbara started Gilpatrick Construction Company.
Upon retiring in 1984, he and Barbara moved back to Whiting, Maine. His most enjoyable moments were spending time with his family, hunting and fishing, and his vegetable garden.
He is survived by his loving children, Hunter Gilpatrick (Mary Jane) of Topsham, Maine, Gary Gilpatrick (Sally) of Whiting, Maine, Denise Gilpatrick Farmer (Bob) of East Point, Georgia, and Barry Gilpatrick, of Sebastian, Florida, grandchildren, Meagan Gilpatrick of Topsham, Maine, Lauren Gilpatrick of Freeport, Maine, Alison Harding of Topsham, and great grandchildren Ava Biedrzycki and Aiden Blow, both of Topsham.
