Jane Diggins Harnedy, age 83, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on December 14, 2017. Jane was born in New York City, NY, and moved to the Roslindale/West Roxbury area of Boston as a baby. She grew up and attended schools in Boston, and graduated 3rd in her class of 276 from Roslindale High School in 1951.

Jane married Jim Harnedy of Brookline, MA in 1953 at Holy Name Church, West Roxbury, MA. In addition to leaving her husband, Jim, Jane leaves her two daughters – Susan Blackwell and her husband, Robert Barbagallo of Albuquerque, NM and Sandra Carr and her husband, James Carr of Summerville, SC. Jane also leaves four grandchildren – Michael Blackwell and his wife, Jessica Blackwell of Ashburnham, MA, Jennifer Maguire of Southport, ME, Joseph Carr and his life partner, Tondra Russell of Summerville, SC, and Nora Carr and her husband Robert Caldwell of Charleston, SC as well as 9 great-grandchildren.

In 1975, Jane left her position as Office Manager of a large non-profit Mental Health Agency of 35 therapists to pursue a new career in fine art. She took art lessons from several nationally known artists, and later went to the University of Maine at Augusta as an art major.

Jane moved to Boothbay, ME in 1979 and became a full-time artist, using oil paint and acrylics to capture the beauty of nature. She opened the Blue Lobster art studio-gallery in the summer of 1980. When Jane moved to Bucks Harbor, Machiasport, ME in 1998, her studio-gallery continued to thrive in its new location and has been in operation for over 3 decades. Her work has graced the covers of books and magazines, and has been exhibited in numerous galleries. Recent exhibits of Jane’s work include a one-person show at the College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, ME and special exhibits at the Penobscot Marine Museum, Searsport, ME and at the State Capital in Augusta, ME.

In addition to her artwork, Jane collaborated on many creative projects with her husband, Jim. Together, they co-authored five books. Jane’s interests also included gourmet cooking and a love of animals. For more than forty years, Jane and her husband, Jim, raised and showed Kerry Blue Terriers and also operated the Blarney Stone Kennel while living in Boothbay, ME. In 2010, they adopted a West Highland Terrier named Duncan, who has blessed their lives with love, laughter, and joy.
