Obituary for Carolyn L. Johnson (Schade)

Carolyn Schade Johnson, a longtime resident and highly regarded citizen of Machiasport, Maine, died Wednesday, March 8 at Downeast Community Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Born in 1928 to the late Charles Schade and Ruth (Proctor) Page in Batavia, New York. She attended Beaver College in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania (class of 1949), going on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the Washington State Normal School in Machias.

She taught in Stockton Springs in Maine and Manchester, New Hampshire. She wore many hats professionally, retiring with the United Shoe Workers of America/New England District Council No. 1 (1967-1983). Drawn back to the Downeast coast, Carolyn and family came home to her mother Ruth and step-father Darrell Page.

Carolyn was deeply committed to public service and was a long-time member of the Machiasport Historical Society. She was extremely knowledgable on local history and the genealogy of families in our area and donated much of her time to preserving our traditions and our past for future generations. Her world-famous fish chowder served at the Historical Society's annual luncheons and August Homecoming will be deeply missed. She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandma. Her outgoing nature and joy of living encompassed not only her immediate family, but also her considerable extended family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Paul Johnson, and grandson Kurtis Johnson of Machiasport and granddaughter Ellen J. Smith and LTC James Smith of Buckeye, Arizona. Great-grandchilden Gage, Iris, Emma and Ezra with their mom Bethany Johnson, and Jaxson Smith, who brought endless happiness to her later years. Extended family members Team Mercer/Landers, her New York family, Doug Woods and Jeff Stein (surrogate sons), Al & Sue Sousa, Cathy and Barbara Johnson and numerous treasured others.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Allen D. Johnson, her son, A. Douglas Johnson, Jr. and grandson Darrell D. Johnson.
A celebration of life will occur at the Larrabee Baptist Church, Machiasport, ME on Monday, March 13th at 11am.
