Obituary for Pauline L. "Polly" Bailey

Pauline L. Bailey
Lubec
Pauline L. “Polly” Bailey, 92, died July 1, 2016, in Machias, Maine, following diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma.  She was born in Lubec, Maine, January 20, 1924, the daughter of Harold Elias “Buck” Lawrence and Arlene (Ramsdell) Lawrence.  She began her secondary education with a year at Lubec High School, graduating from Maine Central Institute, and completing courses at the University of Maine in both Orono and Machias.  Pauline served on the board of directors of, and was vice-president of the North Lubec Manufacturing and Canning Company, and was a member of Eastern Star, the Lubec Historical Society, and the Lubec Woman’s Club.
In 1942, Pauline married Eugene “Roy” Bailey, and they were happily married for 48 years.  She laughingly called herself a “camp follower”, traveling with Roy to North Carolina, Virginia, California, Tennessee, and Florida while he served in the Marine Corps and as a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Pauline had a passion for her family, reading, gardening, and travel.  With Roy, she lived in and traveled to many interesting and beautiful places.  After his death, she continued to travel with friends.  However, she always loved Lubec and considered it her home.
Predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her son Eugene L. Bailey, Jr., Pauline is survived by a son, Harold Bailey and his wife Margaret "Peggy" of Lubec; a daughter, Janice Wilson and her husband Michael of Cooper, and a daughter-in-law, Constance Bailey of Millis, Massachusetts; four grandchildren: Dawn Cleathero and her husband Kirk of Norton, Massachusetts, Kathleen Bailey Smith of Nashua, New Hampshire, David Wilson of East Machias, and Shawn Wilson and his fiancée Rachel Polchies of Baileyville; five great grandchildren: Camden and Parker Cleathero of Norton, Massachusetts, Nicholas and Noah Smith of Nashua, New Hampshire, and Matthew Wilson of Baileyville; and one nephew, David Bailey and his wife Linda of Hollis, New Hampshire.

Pauline and her family wish to acknowledge the special friendships Pauline shared with Anna Matthews, Linda Mallar, Maureen Lewia, Marylou McGraw, and Raymah Lyons – who were always there for her.  The family also wishes to express their gratitude to those who, with compassion and dedication cared for her, including Dr. Robert Abrams and the staff of the Regional Medical Center at Lubec; doctors and staff of Cancer Care of Maine; doctors and staff at the Downeast Community Hospital, and Dr. Charles McHugh and staff at the Marshall Healthcare Facility.

Services will be held 2pm Saturday July 9th at the Christian Temple Church of Lubec.  There will be no visiting hours.  A private, family interment will be held at the Split Hill Cemetery, Lubec.  Funeral arrangements are with McClure Family Funeral Home, Machias, Maine.  In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Lubec Memorial Library, the Christian Temple Church, or the charity of their choice.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.mcclurefamilyfuneral.com
