Wilma “Billie” Rae (Reynolds) Ingalls, 97, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2014, surrounded by her children, after experiencing a stroke, here in her home community of sixty-two years. Her spirituality and lovingness assured her joining with God and loved ones who'd gone before in a joyful eternity.
Billie was born April 4, 1917, in Lubec, Maine, to Eva Knight Reynolds and F. Maurice Reynolds. While just a Junior in high school, she was introduced to Hollis Ingalls by friends on Easter Sunday in 1935, beginning their sixty year romance and partnership. They were married in June 1937. As he continued his distinguished career in education and administration, she developed her award-winning life-long work in community service, club officership, and homemaking. Some of her many memberships included the Center Street Congregational Church of Machias, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Downeast Community Hospital Auxiliary, the Extension Associations of the University of Maine and Washington County, Machias Bay Chamber Concerts, the Federation of Women's Clubs (General, Maine, Machias and Lubec, for over 70 years), The Ursula Penniman Study Club, and the Machias Blueberry Festival (including 36 years as cooking contest chairman.) Among her numerous awards for this work, in April 2005 Billie received a community service recognition from the State of Maine.
She will be treasured always amongst family, friends, and associates as a uniquely generous and kind spirit, supporter of the arts, an exceptional cook, seamstress, and social and family leader.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Hollis ;two brothers Frank and Bryce, a sister Norma, and a great-grandson baby Gavin Ingalls.
She is survived by her daughter, Valarie (Ingalls) Preston and husband Ivory “Fuzzy” Preston of Roque Bluffs, son Brian Ingalls and wife Nancy of Marshfield, and son Duane Ingalls and wife Stacey of Machias and Cutler. Also grandchildren Daren Hoffman and wife Brenda, Shawn Ingalls and fiance Denise, Jason Ingalls and friend Brandi, Joshua Preston and wife Lisa, Katie Orr and husband Jason, Arthur Ingalls and Jamal Harmon; great-grandchildren include Sienna Ingalls, Natalee Orr, Jaycee Orr and Taygen Orr.
Donations in Billie Ingalls' memory may be made to Center Street Congregational Church P.O. Box 265, Machias, Machias Buy Chamber Concerts, P.O. Box 332, Machias, or Downeast Community Hospital, 11 Hospital Drive, Machias.
Funeral services will be held 11 am Saturday May 31 at the Center Street Congregational Church with Rev. Eric Kelley and Rev. Betty Duzen officiating , followed by a time of fellowship in the Vestry. Burial will follow in the Longfellow Cemetery at 2 P.M. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services Machias and Lubec .
