Jonesport

Barbara K. Young, 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Jonesport, ME May 21, 2012. She was born in Jonesport Feb 14, 1923, the daughter of the late Lewis B. and Frances (Harmon) Kirby. She graduated from Jonesport High School and attended Washington
State Normal School, and became a teacher until her marriage. She was a lifelong member of the Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, the Jonesport Literary Club and a member of the Rumery Chapter of the.O.E.S. until 1977. She assisted her husband in his medical practice until the family moved to Bethel, ME. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary to the Maine Medical Association, serving as president for one year. She later returned to her home in Jonesport where she worked as a librarian at Peabody Memorial Library. For many years, Barbara was a dedicated employee at the Jonesport Town Office. She will be remembered for her fantastic cooking skills, having her recipes published in the national magazine, Holiday, in the 1950’s; her great sense of humor, love of art, animals and her devotion to family.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Colby of Rosedale, MD, and her children Dan, of Pembroke, ME, Debbie, Katie and son in law Matt Webb, of MD; two sons, John of Colorado; Daryl of Jonesport and his children, step daughter Kelsie Ibarra, his son John Michael, wife Tania and their son Michael Lewis; her brother Lewis F. Kirby, wife Emma Ann and their daughter Janet Crowley, husband Bruce and their daughter Maegan, Lynne Kirby and son Jacob; several close relatives, and her great friends, Joyce Bryant, Evelyn Armstrong King, and Becky Kendall.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband H. John Young M.D, a nephew Michael Kirby, daughter in law Jonnie Lynn Young, lifelong friends Frances Carver and Frances Kelley, many relatives and most recently her close friend Sam Auerbach. A graveside service at the Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport will be held at a later date.
