After a long fight against Cancer, on Sunday, November 18th, 2018, Harry W. Johnson Jr, 87, took his final breath. Surrounded by family who were sharing stories and memories, Harry was able to open his bright blue eyes and give them a final smile.

Harry was born at home in Machias on September 14, 1931 to Harry W. Johnson Sr and Grace Marie (Bean) as one of 13 children.

In 1952 a shared love of horses brought Harry Jr. and Maxine Abbie (McAtee) of Plymouth,Me. together at Bass Park Raceway in Bangor.  

 Harry served in the Army during the Korean War. While serving, Sgt Harry Johnson Jr. was stationed in Germany whose duties as Forward Observer earned him several medals including those for Rifle and Sharpshooter. 

Upon his return 1954  Harry married his beloved soulmate Maxine.(Tink) of 64 years, and started their family of 5.

 He  began a successful career in paving, while working for Warren Brothers, Harry was instrumental in the creation of the I95 corridor from from Newport to Houlton. He continued his paving career with Harold MacQuinn and Ring’s Paving.  

Even after his retirement Harry continue working for Blueberry Ford until his 84th year. In his free time, he continue with harness racing,  as a licensed trainer and owned and raced many horses. 
 Harry enjoyed farming and was an avid hunter.  He was a member of American legion,and VFW.


Whether in work or family, he gave nurturing guidance to all. After the death of his brother Everett “Dick”, Harry took on the father-roll for his seven sons: Breen, Bryan, Carey Don, Everett, Danny, Alan and Terrance. He was quick with a humorous story and loved to tease. 




He is survived by his wife: Maxine, children Karen  and Bill McNerney  of Whitefield, NH their children Kacey, cornelius (Cj)and Erin; Kelly and Bert Paradis of Manchester, NH, their son Trevor; Michael Johnson of Cherryfield, ME, his children Elizabeth and Josh; Kay and Joel Albee of East Machias, and their children Edward, Katie and Joshua; Willie (Harry W. III) and Tammy of Trenton, ME. their children Ashley and Brooke; as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a special ex daughter in law Cheryl Johnson.  His surviving siblings are Geraldine, Rachael, Marlene, Earl and Edgar. He is predeceased by both parents, his brothers; Gerald, Everett “Dick” and Elmer, his sisters; Patsy, Gertrude and Phyllis. 

Our family is so grateful to the CHCS-Hospice Services for helping us fulfill his last wish of being able to stay at home during his final days. Also to our Community and the VFW for all of the support they have given throughout the years. 

We also would like to express our sincere appreciation for the love and support we have felt from our family at Ring’s Paving. 

Harry is and always will be deeply loved and sorely missed. 

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, to honor Harry please donate to your local Hospice, VFW and or food pantry.
