Mary Jean (Ayers) Ashby Dudley, mother, sister, grandma, aunt, and dear friend to many, passed away at her home in Pembroke on October 6th after more than a year long battle with lung cancer. Mary was born November 8th, 1950, the daughter of Everett and Gertrude Ayers of Perry.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Shirley McPhail, and her brother, Michael Ayers. Mary is survived by her dear friend, Ray Avery of Pembroke, by her four children and their spouses, Brenda & Alex Hughes of Nashville ,TN, Robert & Fran Ashby of Brunswick, Sheldon & Heather Ashby of Portland, and Everett Ashby of Lewiston, and her nine grandchildren.Mary is also survived by her sisters Rena Packer of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont, Patty Jollotta of Bethel, Alaska, her brother John Ayers of Memphis, TN, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to spending time with her family and friends, Mary enjoyed seeking out antiques and collecting unique trinkets and home decor.She appreciated antique cars and for several years Mary enjoyed maintaining and showing her own 1966 maroon Ford Mustang at local car shows. Mary was an excellent cook! Even after her four children were grown and out of the house Mary loved to get in the kitchen to bake cakes, pies, and other goodies to surprise her friends. Mary was also an avid gardener. Her home is surrounded by colorful flowering plants and berry bushes. Every year, she meticulously maintained a vegetable garden, often starting the plants from seeds herself in early spring. Come fall, Mary would disseminate the fruits of her labor to friends about town. Mary will be missed by many!

Graveside funeral services will be held 1pm on Thursday October 18th at Forest Hill Cemetery, Pembroke. Family & Friends are welcome to gather and celebrate Mary’s life following the service at the American Legion, Front Street, Pembroke 2pm-4pm.
