Obituary for Jean Marie Mills
Jean M. Mills, 67, of Lubec passed on March 26, 2018 while holding the hands of loved ones.
Born in Lubec on Dec. 8, 1950, Jean grew up “Down Dixie” surrounded by extended family and close-knit neighbors. She was a determined woman, and earned a Masters in Education while raising her family, studying by night, and teaching during the day. Jean taught 1st grade at Lubec Elementary School for more than 42 years. While there, she influenced the lives of hundreds of children and had the pleasure of making and loving many life long friends that she cherished dearly.
Jean retired in June of 2016 and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She loved them all deeply. She was a devoted grandmother and would drop whatever she was doing to help them, whether it be a shoulder to cry on or be their personal chauffeur. Her favorite pastimes included singing to the oldies with her best friend/cousin Holly Little on their frequent road trips and having coffee and visiting with friends. She especially enjoyed traveling around the area in the summer listening to local musicians, hunting for seaglass, attending craft fairs, sewing and making crafts.
Jean was a giving person. Over her lifetime she spent endless hours helping raise funds for others in need, cooking for bake sales, volunteering at the Lubec Food Pantry, making baby gifts, buying toys, clothes, housewares and other items for others. She didn’t have a lot but what she had always shared with others. Jean was loved by many. Her funny, witty and straight to the point attitude will truly be missed.
Jean was predeceased by her father, Francis Denbow, and son, James Mills. She is survived by her mother, Lois Denbow, daughter, Eleody Libby, son in-law Jeff Libby, daughter in-law Jennifer Smart, and grandchildren Mike, Jeremy and Nikki Mills and Haley, Ethan and Thomas Libby.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Sat. March 31, 2018, at the Lubec Elementary School cafeteria.
