Don was a veteran of WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He received many WWII and good conduct medals.
After the war, he was stationed at Chelsea Navy Yard where he met the love of his life, Phyllis B. Berg. They got married August 25, 1950. In 1951, they had their only son Don “Paul” Berg, Jr. Don deployed out on Navy ships for 9 months at a time, mostly to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1957, he was transferred to the island of Bermuda where they were stationed for 3 years. In 1961, he was stationed at Cutler Naval Base, Cutler, Maine, where he spent 3 years as one of the first sailors to work at the New Cutler Naval Base alongside his good friend, Jim Marsh of Cutler, ME. He purchased a farm in Northfield, ME, where he enjoyed farming, gardening, the outdoors, fishing, and hunting. His last orders were a mine sweeper ship out of South Carolina that deployed to the Mediterranean Sea for 9 months.
