Emma Marie (Hooper) Cunningham
Machias- Emma (Hopper) Cunningham, 88, after a brief battler with a sudden illness went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2017. She was born in Machias on January 24, 1928, the daughter of Merrill (Cardy) and Inez (Morse) Hooper.
Emma was born and raised in Kennebec with many family members nearby. She married young and had her son Reggie, Sr. She was able to enjoy many years with her family and friends in Kennebec. Emma started working as a teenage in the sardine factory. Throughout her life Emma worked many jobs. For years, she worked as a CNA at Community Health and Counseling and the local nursing home. Later on, Emma was a Foster Grandparent at Fort O’ Brien Elementary and then spent many years working as a Senior Companion.
Emma is survived by her daughter –in-law, Joanne (Calder) Hicks and many grandchildren, Reggie Jr. and his wife Marge; Jason Hicks and his fiancé Nichole Wood; John Ohmeis and wife, Carolle; Chrystal Hachey and her husband John; James Hicks and his wife Angelica; Regema Condon; Aprile Scannell and Elizabeth Hicks. She is also survived by her sister Eloise Vetrano and her husband Richard; 26 great grandchildren; 15 great great grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by all of her children, Reginald Hicks, Sr.; two infant children Carolyn and Wayne; a grand-daughter Darlene; and a great grandson, Paul. As well as, her brothers Roland Hooper and his wife Ginny and Gene Hooper and his wife Flo.
Emma’s family would like express sincere appreciation to all of her caregivers from DECH and Narraguagus Bay Health Care. Thank you is not enough for the compassion and loving care given to Emma and her family during her last days.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to be held on a future date to be determined later.
