Hubert E. “Herb” Phillips Jr. passed away September 8, 2016.  Born August 27, 1933 to Hubert and Mildred Phillips.  He is survived by his wife Bonnie (Hanser), children Sandy (Bill) Kirkham, Mike (Sue), Wendi (David) Smith.  Step-children; Robin (Scott) Dillon, Maleah Wright, Cathi (Ted) Nagel, Jeff Sullivan.  He also leaves 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  He is  survived by his brother Steven and the late Donald Phillips and his late sister Patricia Phillips Allen.

He was an Army veteran involved in various activities throughout his life which included competitive water-skiing, gourmet cooking, snow skiing, volleyball, kayaking, and competitive tobogganing.  He was an avid hiker, he and his son hiked part of the Appalachian Trail and he was a member of the Path Finders Club in Lubec. A motorcycle enthusiast, he traveled cross country.  Herb also enjoyed skydiving, well into his 60's.

After earning his degree in Social Work at the University of Cincinnati, he worked in the juvenile court system finishing his career at Hillcrest School for troubled youth.

In 1994 he and his wife Bonnie, moved to Lubec where Herb became an active member of the community. He was a member of the Lubec School Board, a  member of  the Washington Lodge 37 Lubec Masons, and the West Lubec Methodist Church.

For the last 2 years he was a resident of the  Maine Veterans Home in  Machias.  Herb could always be found with a friendly smile and a hug.

Services will be held 1 pm Saturday October 8, 2016 at the West Lubec Methodist Church .
