Obituary for Allen "Doug " Johnson

Allen Douglas Johnson Jr., 65, departed this world most unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 29th, 2015 from his family home in Machiasport, Maine.

Born in Cambridge, MA to Carolyn and the late Allen Johnson, Doug attended Central High School, Bridgeton Academy. Graduating from Washington County Technical College as a Master Electrician, he served his community for many years as such.

The sudden passing of this fiercely loved man has left an unfathomable void in the hearts of all that loved and knew him. A devoted father, son and brother, Doug lived his life loving and caring for others. His warm presence, infectious laugh, quick witted humor and giant heart made others truly want to be around him and a stranger to few. His love and compassion for others and animals was unprecedented as was his belief in his ability to fix anything and help anyone.

Doug is survived by his daughter, Ellen J. Smith, her husband, Major James D. Smith and Doug’s most recent joy, his grandson, Jaxson Kane Smith. Adoring mother, Carolyn Johnson, loving brother, Paul Johnson, nephew, Kurtis Johnson and family, cousins, Bob and Kathy Mercer, dearest friend, Doug Woods, friend and mother of his daughter, Barbara B. Johnson, a multitude of cousins and extended family and friends, not to forget his four legged companions, Maggie & Mo.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Gates House, Machiasport Historical Society, Machiasport, Rt. 92, with pastor John Sprague officiating. Friendship and refreshments following. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to The Gates House Historical Society and/or The Ark Animal Shelter.
